Lynn was acquired at the trade deadline to bring a veteran presence to a Dodgers pitching staff that features several rookies and second year arms. Now 36 years old, Lynn is nearing the final stages of his career. The age has shown up in Lynn’s 5.92 ERA and 1.41 ERA in 2023. Still, Lynn can miss bats, striking out 181 batters across 171.2 IP this year. Sunday night should be one of his final tune ups before the playoffs.
It’s unclear who will face off against Lynn for the Giants. Ryan Walker is currently listed as the opener, but he is unlikely to pitch more than a couple innings. Walker has been solid out of the Giants’ bullpen this year. He has a 3.20 ERA and has whiffed 71 batters in 52 IP. He threw thirty pitches in his last outing against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. That pitch number is near his high this year. If Walker gets the nod as the opener, expect Ross Stripling or Alex Wood to come in behind him.
